SCMA CONFERENCE 2017 BACKGROUND

SCMA conference has long been an industry marque event where we gather the industry’s outstanding practitioners to share their experiences with the audience. For the 2017 conference, we are pleased to have Sir Bernard Rix as the Guest of Honour and keynote speaker. Sir Bernard Rix recently retired from the Court of Appeal of England and Wales after twenty years as first a High Court Judge and then a Lord Justice of Appeal. As member of the Court of Appeal, he delivered a wide range of judgments on commercial disputes and shipping arbitrations. He was recently appointed as Professor of International Commercial Law at Queen Mary, University of London.

SCMA Conference 2017 “Making Maritime Arbitration Work for you” will feature a mix of speaker presentations and panel discussions to showcase how maritime arbitration can be done more efficiently in an industry that continues to experience difficult headwinds. We have also expanded from our traditional repertoire to explore maritime insolvencies and arbitration in other maritime-related sectors such as the offshore oil and gas and international commodity sectors. This will hopefully position SCMA arbitration into new segments of the maritime value chain.

SINGAPORE CHAMBER OF MARITIME ARBITRATION (SCMA)

The Singapore Chamber of Maritime Arbitration (SCMA) was first established in Nov 2004 under the management of the Singapore International Arbitration Centre. Following industry feedback, SCMA was reconstituted in May 2009 as an independent arbitration body based on an un-administered arbitration model.

The objective of the SCMA is to provide a framework for maritime and international trade arbitrations which is responsive to the needs of the users. Members and users of SCMA come from all sectors of the maritime and international trade communities and from all countries. Together with SCMA’s specialized Panel of Arbitrators and proven track record, SCMA offers the maritime and international trade communities a cost-effective, flexible and neutral approach to resolve disputes expeditiously.
